The Major Errors
"Zanzibarr" error
Hall variety 16. S.G. variety 13l. Unplated, 6a. only, Overprint Setting 3

Hall examined, with a colleague, Edward Bacon, three examples of this error, two in his own collection and one in C.J. Daun's, finding that the position of the second "r" varied in all three cases. He concluded that the error was explained by a shifting of the sheet of stamps at the time that the overprint was made, causing a doubling of the overprint, which happened to be more pronounced in the case of the final letter (Hall, pp.19-20). However, this explanation is scarcely credible in the case of the example illustrated below. It is more likely that the error was a survivor from the process of adapting the setting to the 8x10 format of the 6a. from the 6x10 format of the other values

6a. pale brown, used on piece with 4a. olive-green and sharing "11 se 96" datestamp. Exceptionally rare with only four examples recorded. Guaranteed by Edwin Healy (1919). R.P.S. Certificate (1995). S.G. 13l, £5,000. Photo
