Early Letters and Handstamps
Penang
1820 (1 Oct.) entire letter headed "Prince of Wales Island" from a Subaltern, H. Digby Coxe, addressed to Rear Admiral Henry Digby, rated "2/2" and showing fine framed "liverpool/india ship lr" with red arrival datestamp (16.3.21) on reverse. An interesting and early letter from Penang. Photo

Note: The contents of the letter, which commences "My Dear Friend", would indicate that the author is the illegitimate son of Admiral Digby. After writing in intimate terms about their past "friendship" he then rebukes the Admiral for neglect and demands £490 p.a., or half that amount if he is allowed a room in his house during his stay in London.
