Official Stamps
1949 (20 Jan.) OHMS envelope (complete with contents) registered from Dr. C. Rajagopalachari, the Governor-General of India to Sri Sathyananda Saraswathi Swamigal at George Town, Madras, bearing 1948 (15 Aug.) Gandhi 1½a. brown and 3½a. violet horizontal pair twice cancelled by Governor General P.O. datestamp, the reverse with British Royal Coat-of-Arms wax seal, "J Moore Asstt; Secy./Office of the Private Secy. to the Governor-General, India." handstamp in violet and Madras arrival datestamp (23.1); the envelope contents comprise registration receipt, two letters, written in Tamil, stating that Sadhananda Swamigal is against the low caste people being allowed entry to the Temple and the Act passed by the Government permitting every citizen the equal right to enter the Hindu temples. Swamigal forcefully invites the Governor-General to withdraw the Act; the envelope soiled and fractionally reduced at left, the adhesives variously defective, nevertheless a remarkable and almost certainly unique usage of the Gandhi Service stamps. B.P.A. Certificate (2012). Photo
