St. Eustatia
1781 (26 July) entire letter headed "Monarch St. Eustatia" to Portsmouth, rated "4" and showing, on reverse, light unframed "ply/mouth" handstamp; also 1781 (16 Mar.) entire letter from Duncan Davidson in London addressed to Mr. Perrin in Rome enclosing an extract from a letter received from Sir Geo. Rodney the week before "Sir Geo. Rodney acquainted us of his taking of St. Eustatia, St. Martin and their dependencies with upwards of 200 sail of ships in their ports with French, Dutch and American property, besides an astonishing quantity of all kinds of stores in Eustatia. The property taken reputed to become prize money for those present completed at near three millions".; and 1781 (31 Oct.) entire letter carried privately and addressed to the Vaisseau Du Roy, Le Caton, Martinique, marked "St Eustache" at upper right by the French

Note: War was declared on the Netherlands on 20th December 1780. Rodney's fleet with troops under the command of General Vaughan arrived at St. Eustatia on 3rd February 1781. The Governor surrendered the island to the overwhelming force against him, the neighbouring islands of Saba, St. Martin and St. Bartholomews also surrendered.

St. Eustatia was retaken by the French under the Marquis de Bouille on the 26th November 1781 and held it until 1801
