1801 (23 Aug.) soldier's entire letter to Dublin, rated "d1 Pd" in red ink and although not countersigned by the Commanding Officer as required by the Act of Parliament it was accepted pre-paid for the privilege rate, showing "dominica/sep 1 1801" datestamp and, on reverse across join, arrival c.d.s. Note: The 68th Regiment went to the West Indies in 1801 for the on-going war with France. By August the battalion was concentrated in Dominica with a detachment on The Saints. Mail was sent by naval frigate to Dominica where there were postal facilities. An inter-island schooner provided a mail connecting service with Barbados, from where the Falmouth Packet picked up mail for the U.K.
