Brunei
1895 Star and Crescent
Covers
1902 (23 Oct.) envelope to Sussex bearing 1c., 3c. and 5c. tied by two strikes of the Brunei c.d.s. in purple, overstruck by barred ovals and Labuan (27.10) c.d.s. with a further strike alongside, underpaid (1c.) with Labuan "T" (Proud UP2) and London "2d./i.s.d." struck in red plus "1/10c." in blue crayon and, on the reverse, St. Leonards on Sea arrival (1.12). A rare and remarkable cover. Brunei was not a member of the U.P.U. so its stamps were not valid for overseas carriage, however, only the deficient postage was charged. Only three covers are known to have passed through the postal system without the addition of Labuan stamps and this cover represents the latest date of use of these stamps. Photo
