1898-1902 Anglo-Boer War
1900 (22 May and 14 July) telegrams from Amsterdam and received at Piet Retief with fine squared-circle datestamps in blue, the first including "Yesterday afternoon at half past four 60 mounted enemy soldiers clashed with part of the Swaziland Commando consisting of about 70 of our men under Acting Commandant Blignaut at Scheepersnek. Only 30 men of the enemy escaped. We took 13 prisoners of war" and further details of numbers killed and wounded in the conflict, the second from Special Commissioner W. Emmett requesting Gert Ferreira to buy sacks of mielies on account of the Government and send them to Oshoek. A fascinating pair
