Auction: 18006 - Ancient, Indian and Islamic, British and Foreign Coins and Commemorative Medals
Lot: 1215

India, Kalachuris of Ratnapura, Privthideva I (c.1065-90) or II (c.1135-65), AE Unit, 6.01g. warrior crushing enemies underfoot, rev. Nagari legend srimat prithvideva (cf. Deyell 127-128), fine, extremely rare

Copper units featuring Hanuman are known for Prithvideva (I or II), but the warrior figure on this coin appears to be human. It is possible that the defeated figure below is an upturned lion (head right), copying the Gupta 'lion-slayer' series. If so, this type is unique and unrecorded for the Kalachuris.
