Auction: 18005 - British and Foreign Coins and Commemorative Medals
Lot: 1115
Victoria (1837-1901), Penny, 1858 over 2, young head left, rev. Britannia seated right, holding ornamental trident (cf. BM 1515-1517; S.3948), faint scattered handling marks and two isolated spots of verdigris on obverse in otherwise lustrous patinated fields, a pleasing extremely fine
Offered with two pieces of correspondence from the Royal Mint dated 6th and 23rd August 1969 respectively, in which then Librarian and Curator R. Carnot confirms the overdate attribution and explains this example's similarity to 'one or two similar pieces which we have examined'
The apparent omittance of this variety from the standard reference works is most probably explained by the simple misattribution of known examples to the well documented 1858 over 3 series.
