William Inge served in Captain J. Lowry's Company, 1st Battalion, 40th (2nd Somersetshire) Regiment of Foot. Initially kept in reserve, the 40th bolstered Wellington's centre after La Haye Sainte fell at 6 p.m., helping to drive back the Imperial Guard.
