1779 (11 Sept.) entire letter (red wax seal removed) from Alexander McLean, Port Adjutant at St. John's to his wife Edinburgh, showing manuscript rate "3", unframed "ship" h.s. (Robertson S1) and, on reverse, unframed "greenock" h.s. (crossed by vertical filing crease), complete with transcript of letter which comments on family matters, him seeing the Governor for leave of absence and him acting as Fort Adjutant to the garrison
