Other Carriers In Conjunction With Cunard
Cunard operated throughout the period from 1827-1877 and beyond. There were two major changes in Cunard's relationship with other carriers. The first was the RMSP's abandonment of her British stops after 1850. The other was Cunard's loss of her transatlantic contract to Inman in 1868. After the establishment of the GPU and the anticipated formation of the UPU to include the various colonies of the GPU signatories, the United States put in to effect a prepaid 2d. packet rate to and from Bermuda (and other Caribbean countries) from 1 October 1876 until c. April 1889. This replaced the 4d. rate then in effect and sought to encourage increased trade. After 1880, the UPU 5c. (2½d.) rate came into effect. Bermuda entered the UPU on 1 April 1877
1876 (18 Oct.) Alvah Mudgett, New York Ship Broker, corner advert envelope from St. George's to a member of the family in Prospect, Maine and sent per Quebec Canima to New York, bearing 1865 2d. dull blue cancelled "B/1" (K2) and with St. George's oval datestamp (H3) and "new york/paid all" datestamp (23.10) in red alongside. The earliest recorded cover from Bermuda to the United States at the new 2d. rate and carried on the second trip after the treaty was signed. Photo
