Because private ships did not maintain regular schedules, unless the ship is identified on the cover it is very difficult to determine what vessel carried a particular letter. The Bermuda Royal Gazette recorded the appropriate shipping news often permitting the ship's identification
Forwarding Agents
Six agents operated in Bermuda. Between them there are only ten recorded examples
1841 (20 Aug.) entire letter from Turk's Islands "To the care of Messrs. G. & J. Laurie New York" and thence to William Burgess in Bermuda, rated "4d" and showing superb "ship" handstamp and Philadelphia datestamp, both in blue, and oval framed "Forwarded/by/geo & john laurie/new york" oval handstamp in red and with a further forwarding agents cachet on Godet & Barclay of New York (unrecorded by Rowe) on reverse; highly attractive.
