Because private ships did not maintain regular schedules, unless the ship is identified on the cover it is very difficult to determine what vessel carried a particular letter. The Bermuda Royal Gazette
recorded the appropriate shipping news often permitting the ship's identification

(5 Sept.) double rate envelope from Covington, La, via Middleton & Co., New York, on the Eliza Barss to Bermuda, bearing 3c. green vertical pair (one with small faults at left) sharing double strike target obliterator and with despatch datestamp alongside, manuscript "2" ship fee in blue crayon below, fine "forwarded by/middleton & co./new york." cachet on reverse. A very rare double weight Convention cover. Also a photo of the vessel. Photo
