On May 20, 1812 an official Post Office was established on the island for the first time. There were three official rate structures during the period
1d. Rate Period, Pre-Adhesive 1842-65 including The Postmasters Stamps
1858 (2 Feb.) envelope from Halifax "p Delta" to St. George's, showing light "halifax/paid/nova scotia" tombstone datestamp and manuscript "4" (for B.N.A. rate) + 1d. = "5", the 1d. internal rate almost never noted on incoming covers; repaired tear at top of face panel and a couple of other small imperfections though most unusual. Note: This is one of only two covers that accounts for the 1d internal rate (to be picked up at the PO) in the rate calculations on the cover itself, the other being this sale (lot 97) in which the 1d pays for delivery to the addressee
