1855 (6 Sept.) envelope from Ballan to Leicester, bearing Queen on Throne 2d. (3, faults) and "registered" 1/- (close to large margins), all cancelled by poor Barred Oval "63" (RR), showing a large part strike of the only recorded example of the "evans/blackwood/diggings/st george's express" oval h.s., red crayon "5", handstruck "d6", "australian/paid/liverpool/packet" c.d.s. (28.12) in red with, on reverse, despatch (very fine) and Melbourne datestamps; the envelope a little soiled. The only recorded cover associated with this short-lived express service and the only recorded registered Goldfields Express cover. RPSV Certificate (2012). Photo

Note: Gold was discovered at Mount Blackwood in early 1855. By August, the population was some 12,000 however the post office did not open until 25 September, with F. Evans "of the St George store" appointed postmaster. However, prior to the opening of the P.O., Evans was operating a private express service to Ballan, 11 miles to the south.
