1878 (5 Mar.) mourning envelope "via Brindisi" to Lisbon, showing despatch datestamp, oval-framed "franca" and framed "per fr. packet" handstamp, all on face, the reverse with a superb strike of the "pago/em/macao" Crowned Circle handstamp and Lisbon arrival datestamp (12.4); the envelope flap with pieces missing and torn through on opening, crossing the Crowned Circle handstamp, nevertheless exceptionally rare with only about a dozen examples recorded. S.G. as Type CC2, £10,000. Photo
Note: This was a locally cut marking. It was probably used by the Portuguese postmaster to send letters via the British Post Office
