1843 (1 Aug.) sailor's entire letter "From James Hashé, Seaman H.M. Ship Curacoa Rio de Janeiro" to Yorkshire, countersigned by the Commanding Officer and bearing 1841 1d. red cancelled and tied by Maltese Cross on arrival, showing handstruck "2" and, on reverse, London (9.10) and Halifax (10.10) datestamps; the contents include "I have put a stamp on this letter and if you have any more to pay you must let me know....some of our chaps tell me they won't do and they always stitch a penny in one corner"; soiled and with the 1d. defective though a fascinating cover giving a first-hand account of the problems encountered with the sailors concessionary postage rate.
