1943 (26 June) air mail envelope and letter to Flying Officer J.R. Perceval at the English Speaking Union Club in London, bearing 50c. franking cancelled by Zurich c.d.s. and redirected to Box 111, Bletchley, Bucks. English and German censor seals, the reverse with London (14.7) machine postmark. The enclosure is a lengthy letter from his wife, living in Switzerland, and is mostly written in German and bears the German censor blue wash lines. Also three Cable and Wireless telegrams, one which requests money transfer in Swiss Francs. An unusual link to one of the code breakers. Photo

John Richard Perceval was a linguist and travel writer who studied at the University of Berlin. There he met and married divorcee Sorina Eiche, the mother of threee grown children, in 1936. Sorina travelled to Switzerland in August 1939 and remained there for the duration of the war, to avoid internment as an enemy alien.
