1827 One Horse for One Day or less, limit of Eight Miles, printed in red on wove paper; a complete sheet of ten with control letter "G" (Barefoot 42). The sheet has been split into two and used to make a book (with additional fold line and stitch holes), the reverse bearing manuscript riddles. A rare sheet.

Accompanying this lot is an 1836 Act of Parliament transferring the collection of the tax on horses let for hire from the Commissioners of Stamps and Taxes to the Commissioners of Excise. Photo

Ownership of horses was taxed from 1784, though no special licences were required for horse ownership. The hire of horses was also taxed. Travellers undertaking long journeys often followed the post routes where they were able to hire horses from stage to stage, permitting faster travelling. A ticket had to be carried by the traveller to show that he had paid the required duty. Horses for riding could only be hired by the mile (the tax was originally 1d. per mile); dray horses could be hired either by the mile of by the day
