Brazil Railway Company: An archive of 28 large maroon leather bound ledgers, containing minutes of meetings, directors reports, officail documents and contracts relating to the Brazil Railway Company and its many subsidiaries. Interspersed are specimen certificates of the followng companies, many of which have not been seen before either in specimen or issued form, Brazil Railway Company, 13 different; Parana Railway Co; Sorocabana Railway Co., 4 different; Trans Paraguayan Railroad Co., 4 different; Port of Para; San Paulo Development & Colonisation Co., 3 different; Amazon Canal & Colonisation Co., 2 different; Brazil Development & Colonisation Co., 2 different; Southern Brazil Lumber & Colonisation Co., 3 different; Bolivia Development & Colonisation Co., 3 different; Rio de Janeiro Hotel Co., and Brazil Land, Cattle & Packing Co., most are either overprinted SPECIMEN or SAMPLE. Also included in the lot are several certificates, removed from frames, comprising Brazil Railway Co., 4½% First Mortgage Bonds for £20, £100 and £200 and 500 francs, all 1909, 4½ Loan, 1910, 500 francs and 6% Loan, 1913, 500 francs; Port of Para 5% Loan, 1909, 500 francs, large vignette of the port. All of these are unissued and hole cancelled, probably kept as office specimens/samples. A few printed by Waterlow. All of these are a little brittle with some toning. Those within the ledgers are generally EF. The Brazil Railway Company was founded in 1906 but got into difficulty during the Balkan Wars and the Credit Squeeze. It was reorganised along with its numerous subsidiaries and limped along until the beginning of WWII. A fascinating group of documents and certificates.
