Exchequer Bill, £[100], paying 4 pence per day interest, [1701], signed 'Halifax' at bottom left, typical small format bill with impressed seal of the Exchequer depicting portcullis, scrollwork at left and right, black, ink cross cancellation. Charles Montagu, 1st Earl of Halifax (1661-1715), politician. Member of the House of Commons, Commisioner of the Treasury, Privy Councillor . Elevated to Chancellor of the Exchequer in 1694 and oversaw the major recoinage in that year. Created Baron Halifax in 1700. Negotiated Union with Scotland in 1706. Created Earl of Halifax in 1720. Pencil annotation on face, has been mounted, traces of which remain on reverse, top edge a little ragged, F [R10*].
