Bank in Basel, Share Fr. 5000, Basel 2.9.1855, #239, red/blue, original signature of J.J. Speiser as "Bankdirektor", issued to and signed by Wilhelm Burckhardt-Forcart (1797-1880) as "President". In 1845, Johann Jakob Speiser founded the 'Bank in Basel' as private note-issuing bank at the Marktplatz in Basel with a capital of Fr. 500'000 divided in 100 shares. It was one of the two banks in the City of Basel that owned the right for issuing banknotes. After the founding of the Swiss National bank the Bank lost its main business activity and, in 1907, was taken over by the Bankverein. Johann Jakob Speiser (1813-1856) was the main coin expert to the Swiss Federal Government and had a crucial role in the introduction of the Swiss Franc in 1850. Speiser was also a founder of the Schweizerische Centralbahn. This very rare share is one of the most important witnesses to the history of the introduction of the Swiss Franc. VF[*R10].
