Egypt - 1886 Frontier Field Force
1886 (July) 0.1 P.T. on 1d. to 'hundred piastres' on £1 lilac locally surcharged set of eight, each endorsed "specimen" in manuscript, unused, corner and edge faults caused by removal from archive pages, though an extremely rare set. S.G. MT9-MT16
Note: These stamps were locally produced in July 1886 owing to the difficulty of calculating the exchange rate between Egyptian and British currency. In a letter written in September of the same year Major Bagnold explained the process whilst requesting properly overprinted stamps:
"As the dryness of the Egyptian climate had caused the gummed stamps to curl up or 'cockle' individually, it was found impossible to effect this overprinting of whole sheets by Lithography and each stamp had to be done separately- a self inking revolving stamp being used." Consequentially, multiples are important study pieces-but are extremely rare.
