1840 (9 and 10 January), two "Free" letters from Sergeant Thomas Noon Talfourd (Judge, author and dedicatee of Pickwick) in Monmouth, the first to his sister-in-law Elizabeth Rutt at Dartford, contents include "...I send you one of the last franks", the other to his brother-in-law Pattison Rutt at Maldon, contents include "....in sending you one of the last franks ever to be allowed", both letters include comments on the trial of the Chartist John Frost, who had led the great march on Newport in November 1839, and Talfourd conducted the prosecution. Frost was sentenced to be hung, drawn and quartered, although this was later commuted to transportation for life to Van Diemen's land, although he was eventually released in 1854. An exceptionally important pair of letters. The last day for the use of Free Franks was 10 January 1840. Photo
