1842 Gibraltar to Quebec prices current, endorsed "via N York" and carried by private ship there where it entered the mails with a red datestamp and ms." 20¾" rate to the border with Canada, there it was converted to one shilling and a penny halfpenny Currency, to which was added eleven pence halfpenny Currency to arrive at the "2/1" manuscript rate; cover with some edge toning, otherwise fine and scarce; to compensate for fluctuations in the exchange rare between the United States and Canada the Canadian Deputy Postmaster General introduced a 6% Exchange Surcharge in 1st March, 1842, it remained in effect only until 17th May, 1842 and was then reduced to 2½%, postmasters were instructed to charge 1/0½d (instead of 1/-) for the United States rate of 18¾ cents, this Prices Current from Gibraltar shows this short lived surcharge;
