The design on the reverse of the Malayaman coins is said to represent a map of the Malayaman capital, Tirucoilur, situated on the banks of the River Ponnaiyar. The three hills represent the mountains at the river's source, the single hill being a large rock situated at the site of the ancient capital upon which a small temple is now built.
