Early South India, Pandya (c.1st century BC - 2nd century AD), AR punchmarked Unit, 1.28g, five symbols, rev. Pandyan stylised fish symbol, square AE Unit, 6.32g, horse standing right tied to a three-tiered umbrella or yupa, tree in railing above, large bowl to right, rev. unclear, square / rectangular AE Units (5), elephant right (2), elephant left (3), rev. Pandyan stylised fish (Krishnamurthy 1, 12-14, 58-60, 71; Pieper 769-72; MSI. II. 131-34, 173-97), the first very fine, very clear for type, the second fine, extremely rare, the elephant types about fine to good fine, one a little corroded (7)
The second coin is thought to depict a Vedic horse sacrifice or Ashvamedha ceremony, usually instigated at the start of a new reign to demonstrate the ruler's authority. Similar scenes are depicted on some Gupta coins, all are rare and seldom offered for sale.
