Lot: 734

Edward I (1279-1307), Farthings (2), Class 3c, London, 0.38g, tapering face, crown with curved band, +edwardvsrex, rev. lon don ien sis, edge crack, worn, nearly fine, York, 0.43g, rev. civi tas ebo raci, obverse porosity, fine (N.1053/1; S.1445, S.1454; SCBI 39/1009 & 1011 these coins; Stewartby p.178, IIIc), the first rare, the second extremely rare (2)

provenance:
(i) J J North (from Baldwin, February 1978); Bt October 1998
(ii) F W Longbottom, Sotheby 14-15 May 1934, lot 84 (?); ex Harris; P Woodhead (from Seaby, October 1962); J J North (acquired November 1989); Bt 1999

The second coin is probably ex Neck, Webb, Montagu and (possibly) Heywood, as the weight (6.3gns) matches the coin described in the Webb catalogue and the Montagu provenance agrees. The Longbottom catalogue gives Montagu and Heywood as a provenance, but a quoted weight of only 4.8gns renders the trail uncertain.
