1670 (19 Sept.) entire letter from London to Livorno with, on reverse, a fine strike of the "franches/(rose)" type 3 cachet; fine and extremely early usage of this rare marking; 1685 (21 Sept.) entire letter from London to Malaga, on reverse a good strike of the "franches/(rose)" type 6 cachet, fine and scarce. Each with J. Van der Linden Certificate (2011)

This marking was used by the Foreign Office, by order of the Gardiners Survey "There is a mark applied to the part of the letter where the post is expressst to have been paid, to obscure it from the Forraine Postmasters abroad"
