1888-93 Overprints on stamps of Great Britain
Covers
1889 (21 Nov.) Tamsen envelope from Eshowe to Waterberg, Transvaal, bearing 1d. marginal block of four with 2d. manuscript surcharge in red on each stamp, carried out without authority, all of which have been pen-cancelled to obliterate the surcharge and with each stamp cancelled by double-ring datestamp, Durban (22.11) and Pretoria (27.11) c.d.s. on reverse; envelope with a couple of faults; also loose 1d. vertical pair and 3d. marginal single similarly treated. Photo
Note: It would appear that there was a shortage of 2d. stamps at the Eshowe Post Office in late March 1889 as both 1d. and 3d. stamps were surcharged 2d. in red ink. The postal authorities must have deemed this to be incorrect as these stamps were then pen-cancelled to obliterate this manuscript surcharge
