Note: Charles Bell joined the Indian Civil service, caught malaria and was hospitalised in Darjeeling. He learnt Tibetan and mentored the exiled Dalai Lama. He retired from the Sikkim Agency in 1918 though was recalled by Lord Curzon in 1920 to support Tibet's economic, educational and military development
