1887-1904 letters with contents (4), relating to G.H. Bretherton, who in 1887 was a Lieutenant in the Corps of Guides based at Mardan (near the Khyber Pass). In 1903 as Major he was the chief supply and transport Officer for the Tibet Mission escort and in 1904 was drowned, with two Gurkas, when one of the missions Berthon boats was caught in a whirlpool and swamped whilst crossing the Brahmaputra river.
The first, a letter to Bretherton from the "Military Secretary to the Viceroy" to Mardan and re-addressed to Kashmir (stamp torn away), the second from George Curzon, Parliamentary Secretary for foreign affairs to Bretherton at Kashmir, the third to Mrs. Bretherton from George Curzon, regarding the death of her husband, the final letter, again to Mrs. Bretherton, signed "Kitchener" (Adjutant General in India) mentioning "instructions that the medal which your husband would have received for his service in Thibet is to be forwarded to you"
