1840 (1 June) 1d. envelope in black on white showing line under the inscription, setting 2, addressed to The Hon H.P. Cholmondeley in Oxford, the reverse bearing London despatch and Oxford arrival in red (2.6) and wax seal bearing the writer's device; watermarked Britannia. Some minor soiling but a fine example of this scarce envelope. Fifty one covers recorded. S.G. PE2c, £18,000
George Horatio Cholmondeley, 2nd Marquess of Cholmondeley; 1792-1870, styled Viscount Malpas from 1792 to 1815 and subsequently Earl of Rocksavage until 1827. He was a British peer and Lord Great Chamberlain of England between 1830 and 1838. Before being called to the House of Lords, he was a Tory Member of Parliament from 1817 to 1821
