Lithuania: Lithuanian Liberty Loan, 1919, bond for $50 printed by the American Bank Note Co., no.A01775, stylised horseman in full armour at top, orange and black, text in English and Lithuanian, issued by the Lithuanian Mission to America, no coupons remain, 2 punch holes in right margin, very fine. [R11*]
The country was gradually annexed by the Russian Empire during the 18th century but achieved a short period of renewed Independence at the close of WW1. The country was again occupied during WWII and then became part of the Soviet Union. The first state to break with the Soviet Union and declare independence again in 1990. This is the first issued piece we have seen and it appears not to have been cancelled, the holes at right probably just for filing.
