The Mansfeld region, located half way between Erfurt and Magdeburg in the German federal state of Saxony-Anhalt, is well known for its mining activities. After its foundation in the year 1900 this company operated an electrified light railway there (line from Eisleben to Hettstedt). When rail activities were ceased in 1922, it focused on becoming a major regional supplier of electricity and energy.
