'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. In a skilful reconnaissance he discovered an occupied enemy shelter about 700 yards in front of the lines. He returned and organised a raiding party, and dividing them into three sections attacked the shelter, taking two prisoners and killing six of the enemy. He then successfully brought back his party and the two prisoners. He did fine work.'
