Auction: 14USA - Spink Shreves September 2008 Collector's Series
Lot: 1011
#1b, 5c Orange brown, a spectacular used example of this scarce color variety, possessing large to enormous margins all around, with nearly one half of the adjoining stamp appearing at bottom, absolutely gorgeous color and impression on bright paper still retaining its full original bluing, choice central strike of a red squared grid postmark, an extremely fine gem; despite the obvious and distinctive orange brown color this stamp possesses it originally received a 1980 PF certificate stating the stamp to be of the gray brown shade, it is now accompanied by one PF certificate erroneously identifying its shade, the owner wishing to correct the PF´s error resubmitted the stamp in 1998 and received a certificate now calling it the red brown shade, in frustration the owner sent it to both Dr. W.F. Amonette and Wade E. Saadi (each highly respected specialists in the issue) and obtained letters from each identifying the stamp as the orange brown shade (bright orange brown, from the first delivery - according to Mr. Saadi); 1998 PF certificate as a #1; ex-Granzow.
