Canadian Contingents in the Boer War, 1899-1902

The John Wannerton Collection, Part 1

1900 (16 Aug.) letter sheet from a member of the Natal Field Force at Twyfelaar Farm "near Source of Komatie River Transvaal" to Hamilton and redirected to St. Catherines, bearing G.B. 1d. cancelled by F.P.O. c.d.s. and additionally tied by large part arrival "flag" machine datestamp, and with oval-framed "canadian contingent/south africa" datestamp (30.8) in lilac at left, arrival c.d.s. (27.12) on reverse; interesting contents includes "a convoy is leaving here in a few minutes to go for supplies to Wonderfontein Station, on the Pretoria-Delagoa Bay Railway Line" and "...we are completely cut off and isolated from all communications"; tear on face panel though an unusual item from a Canadian serving with the Natal Field Force.
