Nearly all mail was detained in Ladysmith until the siege ended although a few covers are known to have been smuggled out during the siege
1899 (2 Nov.) Natal ½d. brown card, written at "8 am" to Pietermaritzburg, cancelled with double-ring datestamp and with G.P.O. Natal arrival c.d.s. (2.11) at left; a scarce item carried out on the last mail before the rail was destroyed after noon on the same day
