Originally built under the Act of 1896, the tramway was first operated by the British Gas Traction Company, using gas powered trams. These were unsuccessful and the Blackpool, St. Anne's and Lytham Tramways Company purchased the assets and gained authorisation in 1900 to replace the line with an electric tramway, opened in 1903. In 1922 the borough of Lytham St. Anne's was created and the trams branded with the 'Lytham St. Anne's Corporation'.
