Mercia, Offa (757-796), Penny, 1.06g, light coinage, East Anglia, c.780/5-c.92/3, portrait type, Wihtred, crude East Anglian style bust right with diadem?, +offa+rex+, lozenge-shaped o and chevron-barred a, rev. +p / ih / tr / ed, in angles of doubly fleured cross fleury containing rosette with pelleted border (Chick 178b - same dies; Blunt -; N. -; S.906), lightly cleaned, surface delamination, veritably a well above-average example with a full, round flan and extensive detail remaining, very fine, the East Anglian portrait coinage of Offa very rare and unknown prior to Chick's July/August 1989 SNC article; 'A Portrait Coinage for Offa in East Anglia', p.191-2
