Stephen, Penny, 1.23g, 'Watford' type, Southwark, ?Wulfwold, crowned bust right, sceptre before, without inner circle, rev. +wvlf[...]svt, cross moline, fleur in each angle (N.874; S.1278), reverse off-centre, fine, a rare variety
provenance
Found near Wroughton, Wilts, 2012
One of two coins from a dispersed hoard, Treasure report, 2012 T544 - for the other, see lot 1506.
The mint signature for Southwark and Sudbury at this time is confusing. The usual reading for Southwark is svdw and that for Sudbury is svtb. This coin reads similar to the latter but the moneyer Wulfwold and the 'Watford' type variety without the obverse inner circle are known for Southwark and not for Sudbury. This coin is therefore attributed to Southwark.
