'For conspicuous gallantry in action. He organised stretcher-bearer parties and brought in wounded under heavy fire. Although wounded in the arm, he continued to perform his fine work all day, showing great pluck and devotion to duty. The following day he again went out under heavy fire to make sure that all wounded were brought in. He has in many previous actions done most excellent work.'

8239 Sergeant John Walter Whitehead, D.C.M. served with the Leicestershire Regiment during the Great War, and was additionally awarded the Italian Bronze Medal of Military Valour (London Gazette 31.8.1917)
