Ningpo
1847 (19 Oct.) entire missionary letter to New York from Ningpo, manuscript date in lower corner "Nov. 14 47.", bearing Boston "28 MAR" c.d.s. in red, on reverse is manuscript "ningpo" in red ink and a light strike of oval "forwarded from/baptist miss. rooms/boston" in red (45x25mm). This letter was carried by a local courier agent from Ningpo to Shanghai, thence to Hong Kong and by private ship to U.S.A., hence no other postal markings. This is the earliest known , non-military, letter from Ningpo and a very important item of postal history. Photo
