Auction: 13004 - World Banknotes
Lot: 125
Government of Barbados, a set of two bromides showing a design for a $2 note, with the issue date 1 April 1914, serial numbers A/1 00000, obverse showing Queen (Amphitrite?) in chariot drawn by hippocamps at centre, value in large tablet at centre and at each corner, reverse shows helmeted goddess at the centre of a large ornate vignette. Both are mounted on yellow paper, on the reverse of which is a true copy of a letter dated 19 August 1913 from W.L.C.Phillips, Acting Colonial Secretary, making enquires about issuing Barbados currency notes of small denomination, and addressing issues of numbers and costs. Also a small design for a hippocamp labelled "Barbados Note" and dated "12 April 1935" with a De La Rue handstamp
(unlisted), both bromides hand annoted with the date "13 Oct 1913" and labled "A" and "B". Due to minor paper expansion/shrinkage, both bromides are slightly torn at the top left and bent at the low left. An important discovery, unique and fascinating (4)
