Government of Southern Nigeria, a fascinating series of bromides showing designs for a proposed series of banknotes, included are obverse images of a 10/-, £1, £5, £10 and £100, all have arms at top centre, with large ornate borders, and values at the centre and each corner, and a tracing paper overlay simulating an underprint and samples of the paper to be used for the notes. Additionally, there are seven different reverse designs showing a hippopotamus at centre and small crocodiles in a large ornate border. Also includes a two page letter from De La Rue, which originally accompanied the above items, dated 22nd April 1909, explaining the items to Sir Walter Egerton, Governor of the new Colony and Protectorate of Southern Nigeria, and signed by Thomas De La Rue.
(unlisted, and no notes ever issued for Southern Nigeria), all items backed on card, bromides generally in excellent condition, many annotated in red ink on reverse, tracing paper overlay torn off the page and front page of letter somewhat crumpled. A brilliant lot which tells the story of a set of notes which never came into being, unique and extremely interesting (20)
