Glasgow Academy, gold prize medal 1825, engraved in nine lines ´Thomae Mackay hoc numisma optimae pronuntiationis praemuim condiscipulorum suffragiis adjudicatum donandum curavit Franciscus Jeffrey Acad. Glasc. quondam Rector a.d. mdcccxxv, rev. engraved in three lines within a wreath ´Demosthenes pronuntiationi palmam dedit, Scottish marks for 18 carat gold and maker´s mark im below, in a contemporary gold frame with decorative mount and ring for suspension, total weight 18.23g, good very fine, very rare Estimate £ 400-500 Francis Jeffrey (1773-1850), the Scottish Judge, Literary Critic, and founder of the Edinburgh Review, was Rector of Glasgow Academy in 1820 and 1822. On his retirement he founded a prize for the best student of ancient Greek.
