Northumbria, Aethelred I (first reign 774-79), AR Sceatta, 0.89g, edilred, l and r inverted and outward facing, around central small cross, rev. stylised stag standing right with long curling tail within which a cross, triquetra below, two pellets by front legs (Abramson -; N.180; S.850), centrally struck, good very fine, a pleasing example of this extremely rare type Estimate £ 1,200-1,600 Single finds of this issue with the stag and triquetra seem to be clustered on East Yorkshire. The SCBI/EMC records eight examples of Aethelred I Sceattas with the stag reverse of which five have the triquetra below and cross within the tail loop.
