Germany, Prussia, Friedrich Wilhelm II (1786-97), silver medal by J C C Stierle, on the engagement of his two sons, Crown Prince Friedrich Wilhelm and Prince Friedrich Ludwig Carl, 1793, the two Princes, as the Dioskuri, holding garlands above an altar decorated with portraits of two Princesses, rev. legend in fourteen lines, garland below, 45mm. (Bolzenthal 3; Henckel 1998; Julius 376; Marienb.3301), extremely fine, light toning, scarce Estimate £ 250-350 In March 1793 the four Princesses of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, Charlotte, Therese, Louise and Frederica, met King Wilhelm II of Prussia at the theatre in Frankfurt-am-Main. The Prussian King was clearly overwhelmed by so much beauty, for shortly afterwards the double engagement was announced between his two sons, Friedrich Wilhelm and Friedrich Ludwig, and two of the sisters, Princess Louise, and Princess Frederica. The weddings took place in Berlin on 24 and 26 December the same year.
